10 things to do in Utrecht

Utrecht, the underdog city. You probably heard of Amsterdam, with it’s beautiful canals, buildings and shops. But have you seen its neighbor: Utrecht? This enchanting city is famous for its picturesque canals and it’s less touristic and more romantic sides. Utrecht has something to offer everyone. In this blog post, I'll explore ten must-visit places and activities that make Utrecht a perfect destination. 

The city center  

The center is built around six ‘kwartieren’ districts: Museumkwartier, Domkwartier, Universiteitskwartier, Vredenburgkwartier, Stadshuiskwartier and Beurskwartier. If you stroll around these districts you’ll find something behind every corner from shops, to cafés … We visited the city in fall so the brown and yellow hue’s really warmth the streets and was lovely to see.  The old canal that is the center of the city is where you wanna take a walk.  

The Street Food Club

This is for all food lovers who love beautiful designed places. They serve dishes with international flavors from around the world. Enjoy everything from Korean fried chicken to Mexican street corn in a stylish, urban atmosphere. The unique decor and mouthwatering dishes make this restaurant a must-visit for foodies. If your down for a party make sure you visit this on Friday’s or Saturday’s.  

Ruby Rose

This lovely romantic wine and resto-bar in the middle of the center of Utrecht with an interior to say ‘wow’ to. As you enter the building you see the decor of roses in the middle and a ceiling as high with paintings. This resto is perfect for date night or hang with your friends. You need to try the ‘Ruby Rose’ cocktail and order the delicious pizzas!

Shopping

If you’re a treasure hunting vintage lover then Utrecht is the place to be. The city has a variety of vintage stores: vintage island, kilo shop Utrecht, Episode … offering unique pieces.  Another lovely shop is ‘All good things’ is a unique concept store offers a selection of artisanal and sustainable products. From jewelry to eco-friendly home goods. If you're a shopping enthusiast, don't miss The mall, a modern shopping center with a wide range of stores, including fashion, electronics and more. Located in the heart of Utrecht, it's a perfect place to shop or hide from the rain.  

Canals

Utrecht's beautiful canals ‘oude gracht’ and ‘nieuwe gracht’ are the perfect backdrop for a leisurely stroll or boat tour or even a canoe (but that’s for in the summer). The city's unique double-level canals, known as "werfkelders," are lined with cafes, restaurants, and boutiques. Take in the romantic scenery while exploring the waters. Tip: Go to the local supermarket and buy charcuterie and install yourself on the side.

Whiskeybar The Vault

For those who appreciate a good whiskey, The Vault is a hidden gem. Tucked away in a historic cellar, this bar has an impressive collection of over 150 whiskey varieties from around the world. Sample and savor the rich flavors of whiskey in a cozy and atmospheric setting. 

Tijm

This charming lunch spot that offers the perfect matcha lattés to double expresso’s is worth a visit.  The location is near ‘oude gracht’ and you can sit downstairs next to the water.  Enjoy a breakfast or a good cup of coffee in a cozy and intimate atmosphere. 

Dom Church and tower 

This stunning church is located in the heart of Utrecht. You can explore the history or even make a visit in the church. Next to the church there is an old garden ‘Pandtuin’ where the structure reminds you of Hogwarts. The Dom Tower, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, here you can climb the tower for panoramic views over the city.  

Hotel Nox and ‘hemel en aarde’

For a comfortable and stylish place to stay in Utrecht, Hotel Nox offers modern accommodations with a luxurious touch. Its central location makes it super easy for exploring the city's attractions. This former gentlemen’s club is now a stunning restaurant with high ceilings and a beautiful interior. You can order your favorite breakfast dish from the menu or book a table for dinner. 

Nijntje museum

The museum is a place that takes visitors on a journey into the world of the iconic white bunny, Nijntje. Well-known by the Dutch, whether if you're a die-hard fan of Nijntje or just looking for a fun activity to do.

Utrecht is a wonderful place to visit, there are so many cute places and fun things to do! So, pack your back and cruise around the canals in Utrecht!
