But this tropical haven is more than just a beach destination: it is a vibrant mix of cultures, a diverse culinary scene and a host of activities. In this blogpost I’ll take you on a roadtrip through this wonderful hidden gem in the Indian ocean.
How to get to Mauritius
Getting to Mauritius is relatively easy, thanks to its well-connected international airport. Here are some steps you can take to plan your journey:
By Air: Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is the main gateway for international travel to and from Mauritius. It's served by several international airlines, offering direct and indirect flights from many parts of the world. You can book your flight online or through a travel agency. We went with a direct flight of Air Mauritius from Charles De Gaule in Paris, which is about a 12 hours-flight. The airport lies in the south of the country, so make sure you can easily get to your hotel (most hotels provide a shuttle bus from the airport).
Visa Requirements: Check visa requirements for your country before you travel.
Pack Appropriately: Mauritius has a tropical climate, so pack light, breathable clothing. Don't forget your swimwear, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for the beach!
Remember, it's always a good idea to book your flights and accommodations in advance, especially if you're planning to travel during the peak tourist season.
Getting around in Mauritius
Once you're in Mauritius, there are several ways to explore this beautiful island paradise:
By Car: Renting a car is a convenient way to travel around Mauritius at your own pace. You can book a rental car online or upon arrival at the airport. Remember to bring your driving license and check whether you need an international driving permit. Be aware that they drive left in Mauritius!
By Taxi: Taxis are readily available and can be hailed from the street, or booked through your hotel. Be sure to agree on the fare before you start your journey as not all taxis have meters.
By Bus: Mauritius has a fairly extensive bus network which is an economical way to travel. While buses are slower than cars or taxis, they offer a great way to see the local life and scenery.
By Bicycle or On Foot: For the more adventurous, consider renting a bicycle or exploring the local area on foot. This is especially recommended in less busy areas where traffic is light.
Just like any other place, it's important to keep a map or use a navigation app on your phone while traveling around, especially if you're driving or cycling.
Best time to visit Mauritius
Choosing when to visit Mauritius depends on what you want from your holiday. The island is blessed with a tropical climate and you can expect warm and pleasant weather throughout most of the year.
Peak Season (October - April): This is summer in Mauritius and temperatures can reach up to 30 degrees Celsius. The beaches are perfect for sunbathing and water sports. However, this is also the busiest time of the year and prices may be higher.
Off-Peak Season (May - September): This is winter in Mauritius with temperatures ranging between 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. The weather is cooler and less humid, making it ideal for outdoor activities like hiking and exploring. Plus, you'll find fewer tourists and lower prices.
Remember, Mauritius also has a rainy season from January to March, and while it doesn't rain all the time, there might be occasional tropical showers. Always check the weather forecast before planning your outdoor activities.
Tips for your vacation in Mauritius
Best time to visit: may-december
Local cuisine: Dholl puri, octopus curry
Currency: Exchange your money at the airport in Mauritius Rupi
Transport: renting a car is recommended for exploring the island (p.s. they drive left!)
Language: English, French, Creole
Internet: buy a local sim card at the airport it cost about 15 euros for 200 gb. Do not buy it on Airolo, because it’s way to expensive and you only get 5 gb for 20 euros.
Mosquitos: bring lots and I mean lots of mosquito repellent with you!
Wanda: install the app Wanda (belgium app), to know which vaccinations you’ll need for any disease.
Food safety: drink only bottled water and avoid raw vegetables and unpeeled fruits.
Hygiene: wash hands with soap and water frequently or use hand sanitizer if unavailable.
Your trip to Mauritius can start!
Day 1: Arrival and pick-up rental car.
Hotel: Zilwa Attitude hotel
Your vacation begins by landing at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. After landing, head to the car rental booth and pick up your vehicle. We rented our car with Ola Mauritius! Your adventure starts with an hour-and-a-half drive to the northern part of Mauritius.
Upon arrival at your hotel in the North, such as in the beautiful coastal area of Grand Baie, the real relaxation can begin. Grand Baie and its surrounding areas boast some of the most stunning beaches in Mauritius, perfect for unwinding after your journey.
Once you've checked in, head straight to the beach, where you can stretch out on the sands and let the waves wash away the fatigue of your flight. The ocean's inviting waters and the serene environment provide the perfect backdrop to start your Mauritius vacation.
Day 2: beach day at Mont Choisy
On the next day, when your well rested, visit Mont Choisy Beach in the north of Mauritius to fully immerse yourself in the island's natural beauty and serene atmosphere. This beach is a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the stunning surroundings.
By midday, local vendors and nearby cafes start serving a variety of delicious food options at the beach. Don't miss out on trying some local street food like "Dholl Puri" or "Roti", both are tasty and affordable.
In the afternoon, consider taking a short drive to the nearby town of Trou aux Biches. This charming town is just a quick trip from Mont Choisy and offers a wonderful excursion to explore more of Mauritius' beautiful coastline and vibrant local culture.
Day 3: hike Pieter Both
On your third day in Mauritius, set out for an adventurous hike up Pieter Both, the second highest mountain on the island, standing at about 820 meters. This hike is not only a physical challenge but also a chance to immerse yourself in the stunning natural landscape of Mauritius. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, and a good pair of hiking boots, the trail can be steep and rocky.
Important tip: do not attempt to climb the mountain on your own! We found the organisation of Motrek adventures, who organise guided walks. Sadly, due to the heavy rainfall of the last couple of days, the trail was closed and couldn’t make the climb.
Day 4: Visit the capital Port Louis
On the fourth day of your Mauritian adventure, take a break from the natural landscapes and delve into the city life of Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius. This vibrant city offers a mix of history, culture, and modernity, making it a fascinating destination for a day trip. Park your car at the Caudan waterfront. There’s a lot of space and easy acces the city center.
Arriving in Port Louis, you immediately notice the city's vibrant energy. The streets are crowded; people move about quickly, going about their daily routines. It's a strong contrast to the peaceful beaches and slow pace of island life you've experienced so far.
No visit to Port Louis would be complete without a stroll through the bustling Central Market. This vibrant market is the heart of the city, where locals shop for everything from fresh vegetables and exotic fruits to spices and handicrafts. It's a great place to soak up the local atmosphere and maybe even try some street food, like "Dholl Puri," a popular Mauritian treat.
Continue your exploration by walking through the streets of Port Louis, where French colonial buildings stand alongside modern structures. Visit Chinatown, another part of the city known for its restaurants and grocery shops selling Asian goods.
Day 5: exploring Belle mare and Bras d’eau
Start your day with an early visit to Belle Mare, one of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius. The beach is famous for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and fine, white sandy shores. It's an ideal spot for a swim or snorkeling, to explore the vibrant marine life. Belle Mare is quieter in the early hours, allowing you to enjoy the peaceful environment and the soothing sounds of the waves.
A short drive from Belle mare will take you to Bras d'Eau National Park, a hidden gem perfect for nature lovers. This tranquil park features marked trails that wind through dense forests and past volcanic features. It's a great spot for bird watching, as the park is home to several native species including the Mauritian Paradise Flycatcher.
Day 6: Exploring the west
Hotel: Chalet Chamarel
Start your day by packing up and preparing for the drive to your next destination, Chalet Chamarel, known for its stunning views and serene surroundings. Before you head inland, make a small detour to Flic en Flac Beach, located on the western coast of the island. This long, white sandy beach is ideal for a walk or a dip in the crystal-clear waters. Flic en Flac is also great for snorkeling with its coral reef just a short swim from shore.
Enjoy a few hours at Flic en Flac, perhaps relaxing under the shade of a tree or indulging in a lunch at one of the many cafes along the promenade. The beach tends to be lively but has space for everyone to find a quiet spot.

This area is cooler than the coastal areas and is known for its coffee plantations and the famous Seven colored earth and the Chamarel waterfall. Tip: make sure you have a lot of mosquito sprays, because there are a lot of them here! After you explored the area let’s spend your evening enjoying the panoramic views from your chalet. Here we saw the most beautiful sunset ever!

Day 7: Black river Gorges and Riambel beach
Your seventh day in Mauritius begins with an adventurous intent to explore the lush landscapes of Alexandra Falls and Black River Gorges National Park. Before our arrival in Mauritius there was a heavy cyclone, that affected the Island. When we wanted to hike the trails in the park, everything was closed for your own safety. With hiking off the table, we decided instead to visit Riambel Beach, located on the south coast. This hidden gem beach is less frequented by tourists and offers a long stretch of unspoiled sandy shores, ideal for those looking to escape the more crowded tourist spots.
After your beach day on Riambel Beach, we’ve stumbled upon a charming juice bar on the way back to the hotel. Spending time at this juice bar also gives you a chance to interact with locals, offering insights into daily life in Mauritius. The friendly owner shares stories about the origins of the recipes and the importance of using fresh, local ingredients. His farm was right in front of you and he will kindly give you a tour of his land!
Day 8: Le Morne & Chamarel waterfall
Le Morne, known for its stunning views, symbolizes freedom, as it was historically a fortress for escaped slaves. Arrive at Le Morne early in the morning to explore one of the most talked-about locations in Mauritius. As you arrive, you’ll find free parking space right before the beach. If you look behind you, you’ll see the stunning view of the mountain Le Morne.
The peninsula is not only a UNESCO World Heritage site, but also famous for its stunning natural beauty. As you approach, the imposing sight of Le Morne mountain provides a spectacular backdrop. As you make your way to the beach, you find that much of the prime beachfront is dominated by luxury hotels, which restrict access to what are arguably the best parts of the beach. While you can walk along the shore, the areas directly in front of the hotels are reserved for guests, limiting where you can set up for the day. Despite these restrictions, the available public areas still offer plenty of oppurtinities to enjoy the beach. So sit down and relax at the beach.
During our stay at Chalet Chamarel, we were fortunate to be just a one-kilometer hike away from one of Mauritius' most enchanting natural attractions: the Chamarel Waterfall. This stunning waterfall, free to visit, offers a tranquil escape into nature's beauty. We highly recommend planning your visit for the late afternoon. At this time, the usual crowds are gone, allowing you to enjoy the picturesque views in peace. The waterfall, plunging over 100 meters into a lush gorge, is a sight to behold, especially when you have it all to yourself.
While in Chamarel, we also visited the nearby Seven Colored Earth, a famous geological formation known for its surreal, rainbow-hued dunes. Although the entrance fee is 12 euros, we found it somewhat overrated. The site is indeed pretty, and since it was close to our hotel, we didn't mind stopping by. However, we wouldn't recommend driving long distances solely for this attraction. It's interesting, but perhaps not worth the extra effort if you're on a tight schedule or budget.
What truly stood out in Chamarel was our visit to the Ebony Forest. This experience was worth every moment. The forest offers both medium and advanced walking routes, allowing you to choose a path that suits your fitness level and interest. The trails wind through dense, verdant greenery, showcasing the island's rich biodiversity. We were thrilled to see land turtles along the way, adding a touch of magic to our hike. The Ebony Forest is not only a natural wonder but also a conservation success story, making it a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. Be aware: you will also see some big spiders!
Day 9: lagoonflight and Gris Gris beach
One of the best activities we did in Mauritius was the lagoonflight: a 15-minute seaplane ride priced at 150 EUR per person. You get to experience one of the most remarkable sights during your flight. From your high point in the sky, you can spot sea turtles swimming in the clear waters. This was absolutely an amazing experience!
After the seaplane ride over La Prairie and Le Morne, head to Gris Gris beach. This area is known for its dramatic scenery, it offers a strong contrast with the calm lagoons elsewhere in Mauritius. Gris Gris is exposed to the open sea, which means the waves here are bigger and the waters less tranquil. This makes swimming risky, but the beach is perfect for those who appreciate the wilder side of nature.
A short walk from the main beach area leads you to La Roche Qui Pleure, or "The Weeping Rock." According to local legend, the rock formation here appears to be crying as the relentless waves crash into it, causing water to splash up the sides like tears. This spot provides some of the most beautiful views over the beaches and the Indian Ocean. The sight is breathtaking and offers a moment of peace as you take in the panoramic views.

Day 10 & 11: Anantari Iko Mauritius and Blue bay marine park

The main attraction of the day is the stunning La Cambuse beach next to the resort. This beach has the perfect fine white sand and clear, turquoise waters and invites you to dive in and swim.
La Cambuse beach is a gem that's open to the public, making it an ideal spot for anyone visiting Mauritius. Seriously, if you're heading to this paradise, add it to your list!
Day 11: It’s your last day in Mauritius and it's all about diving into the underwater wonders of Blue bay marine park. One of the island's best destinations for snorkeling in Mauritius.This protected area is known for its stunning coral reefs, a rainbow of marine life, and crystal-clear waters. The hotel even sorts out tours to get you there. We spotted so many cool fishies: parrotfish, angelfish …
So dive in and enjoy the underwater show!
